Tennis Belgium regrets that the thrilling Davis Cup encounter between Belgium and Chile came to an abrupt end yesterday following an unfortunate collision between Zizou Bergs and Cristian Garin during the changeover.
Regarding the facts, it was a moment of carelessness resulting from enthusiasm when Zizou secured a break that seemed decisive in the match. There was no malicious intent whatsoever. Carlos Ramos, one of the most experienced referees on the international circuit, followed the official rule protocol and made his decision accordingly. It was indeed an unfortunate accident and therefore an involuntary action, which explains why Zizou received a warning as stipulated by the ITF rules.
Zizou immediately apologized on the court and checked on Garin’s condition. He is a true team player with an impeccable reputation for fair play. Due to his style and sportsmanship, Zizou is a well-respected and appreciated player both on and off the court.
As the Belgian tennis federation, our primary concern is Garin’s well-being, and we hope he is doing well. Additionally, one day after these emotionally charged events, we call for calmness and objectivity. Based on this, we express our full support for Zizou and the Belgian team.
We would also like to thank Team Chile for an intense Davis Cup week, as well as all the fans who attended in Hasselt. Finally, we congratulate the Belgian team on qualifying for the next round of the Davis Cup Qualifiers.

Davis Cup ontmoeting België-Chili

Tennis Belgium betreurt dat de spannende Davis Cup ontmoeting tussen België en Chili gisteren abrupt tot een einde kwam na een ongelukkige botsing tussen Zizou Bergs en Cristian Garin tijdens de kantwissel.
Wat de feiten betreft, gaat het om een onvoorzichtigheid, voortvloeiend uit enthousiasme op het moment dat Zizou een break pakte die beslissend leek in de wedstrijd. Van enige kwalijke intentie was geen sprake. Carlos Ramos, 1 van de meest ervaren referees op het internationale circuit heeft het protocol van regels doorlopen en zijn oordeel gemaakt. Het was inderdaad een ongeluk en dus een onbedoelde actie, wat verklaart waarom Zizou een waarschuwing kreeg, zoals het ITF-reglement voorschrijft.
Zizou excuseerde zich onmiddellijk op het terrein en informeerde meteen naar Garins toestand. Zizou is een echte teamspeler en heeft een onberispelijke reputatie op vlak van FairPlay. Omwille van zijn stijl en sportiviteit is Zizou een graag geziene speler op en naast het veld.
Als Belgische tennisfederatie hopen we in de eerste plaats dat Garin het intussen goed stelt. Verder roepen we met deze verklaring 1 dag na de emotioneel geladen feiten op tot sereniteit en objectiviteit. Op basis daarvan spreken we onze steun uit aan Zizou en het Belgische team.
We danken ook team Chili nog voor de intense Davis Cup week alsook alle fans die erbij waren in Hasselt. We feliciteren het Belgische team met de kwalificatie voor de volgende ronde van de Davis Cup Qualifiers.

Tennis Belgium regrette que la passionnante rencontre de Coupe Davis entre la Belgique et le Chili se soit terminée brusquement hier à la suite d'une collision malheureuse entre Zizou Bergs et Cristian Garin lors du changement de côté.
Concernant les faits, il s’agit d’une imprudence résultant de l’enthousiasme de Zizou au moment où il réalisait un break qui semblait décisif dans le match. Il n’y avait aucune intention malveillante. Carlos Ramos, l’un des arbitres les plus expérimentés du circuit international, a suivi le protocole réglementaire et a pris sa décision en conséquence. Il s’agissait bien d’un accident et donc d’un geste involontaire, ce qui explique que Zizou a reçu un avertissement tel que le prévoit le règlement de l'ITF.
Zizou s'est immédiatement excusé sur le terrain et a pris des nouvelles de Cristian Garin. C'est un véritable joueur d'équipe avec une réputation irréprochable en matière de fair-play. Avec son style et son esprit sportif, Zizou est un joueur très apprécié sur et en dehors du court.
En tant que fédération belge de tennis, notre principale préoccupation est le bien-être de Cristian Garin, et nous espérons qu’il se porte bien. un jour après ces événements chargés d’émotion, nous appelons à la sérénité et à l’objectivité. Sur cette base, nous exprimons notre soutien total à Zizou Bergs et à l’équipe belge.
Nous tenons également à remercier l’équipe du Chili pour cette intense semaine de Coupe Davis, ainsi que tous les supporters présents à Hasselt. Enfin, nous félicitons l’équipe belge pour sa qualification pour le prochain tour des Qualifications de la Coupe Davis.
